Roughness plays an important role in determining how parts work together. Rough surfaces tend to wear faster and have higher friction coefficients than smooth surfaces. And smooth surfaces are easy to clean and keep clean.
Roughness is often a good predictor of the performance of a mechanical part, as irregularities on the surface can be the start of cracks or corrosion. On the other hand, roughness can promote adhesion.
