Topic: Additive manufacturing

3D printing or additive manufacturing is the automatic molding of a product from a three-dimensional object from a CAD model or a digital 3D model. It can be done in a variety of processes where material is deposited, merged or solidified under computer control, adding material, usually layer by layer.

Additive Manufacturing by FMI

A so-called slicer translates a 3D design of a product into a layer-by-layer print file. This indicates for each layer for each point whether or not to print there. AM is thus the 3D variant of the well-known (inkjet) 2D printing.
